Law & Order Takes Time

Law and orderLefty Twitter has its undies in a bunch (as always).

It’s all about Trump and his henchmen. (Law & Order: SVU has now been on the air longer than the original show.)

The complaint is that justice has not yet been visited on any of them. In its way, a valid complaint. The fantasy that Biden might order Trump’s immediate arrest upon taking the oath was always just that.

What’s happening now is precisely what needs to happen. It’s far more delicious than the liberal fantasy.

After January 6, the FBI immediately began its investigations. As requisite prosecutors have had nominations approved, the Department of Justice followed.

Hundreds of insurrectionists have been arrested. More are being sought. Several have begun to squeal. A few have been sentenced. Others are awaiting trial.

Jake angeliRemember that, on the day of the coup, there were three groups of rioters. There were people who followed the crowd, providing cover. There were cosplayers like Jake Angeli, aka “the QAnon Shaman.”  Then there were the dangerous dudes, the serious dudes, the heavily armed dudes, the dudes Trump really thought could and would keep him in power. Those are the dudes we need to find, prosecute, and send to jail for life.

It’s taking time to sort out. Some followers have gotten away with misdemeanors. Some, seen by GQP judges, have been set free on bond. Still others are sitting in cells. And others are still out but looking over their shoulders.

Hawley saluteIt’s the same with Trump and his fellow grifters. It’s a slow, slow drip. Day by day, the net closes. Who’s talking? Which documents and gadgets were seized? What is going to happen next? The good guys won’t say. Bad guys quail and try to get their stories straight.

This is how you go after organized crime. Day by day, piece by piece, drip by drip. It’s going especially slowly because there are co-conspirators within the system – judges, activists, military men, cops.

It must be this way. It can’t be rushed. Every case must be nailed down. Each must be proven far beyond a reasonable doubt before even indictments are unsealed. We can’t risk not-guilty verdicts. Because the risk of a second coup remains real. Action against too many people, too quickly, carries political risk.

The net closes slowly. Lefty Twitter acts like nothing is happening and worries that nothing will. Right-wing Twitter pretends nothing is happening and works toward a second coup, through legislatures, through state and federal courts, through the media.

Chaplin city lightsI much prefer being on this side of the bar to being on the other side. What is Trump thinking today, you wonder, forced to go back on the road to pay for lawyers, playing his greatest hits like an 80s hair band reduced to playing racetracks.

It’s all happening in slow motion. Just don’t doubt it’s happening. For those who have committed crimes, it’s agonizing. It’s going to continue for at least another year. By the time it climaxes the midterms will be in full swing. You can see now?
